        Autumn Winter 2024

Liberated, stylish and talented: Danish artist and illustrator Gerda Wegener lived her life to the full as she explored bohemian Paris and Marrakech in the early Twentieth Century. She provides a rich and creative source of inspiration for Dea Kudibal’s Autumn Winter 2024 collection, bringing together art, femininity and individuality with a bold sense of personal freedom.

Against a background of moody hues of ganache, gold, myrtle green and stormy blue, paler shades of sage and ballet pink add a touch of lightness. The silhouette this season is more fitted to the body to highlight a woman’s form but contrasted with bohemian flourishes of volume and flare. Unsurprisingly, prints echo Wegener’s bold style with hand-painted mimosa blossoms scattered across silk dresses, graphic florals placed delicately on an Art Deco inspired gold background and blurred flowers having an almost leopard skin appearance. The artist’s life in Morocco is reflected in a beautiful placed print that evokes moonlight over a desert medina, strikingly used in a voluminous short dress. Elsewhere, floral prints seem to come to life in a series of jacquards that give a three dimensional aspect to surface decoration: a cross-over belted jacket matched with a deep pleated dirndl skirt in graphic botanicals is a particular standout.

Throughout the collection, the play of masculine and feminine is key. A white poplin blouse, reminiscent of an artist’s shirt, has a high collar and volume sleeves and works beautifully with boyish baggy pants in Saville Row checks or pleated trousers in supple leather. Feminine touches such as tiny covered buttons, frilled cuffs and faggotted edges provide a dainty counterpoint to slouchy tweed blazers and unlined Prince of Wales checked belted coats. Denim loses its workwear image and becomes elegant and chic in a full skirt or bandstand jacket - gold buttons being a witty nod to jeans studs. Knitwear also plays with the contrast between artistic and lady-like with creative fringes bursting from the shoulders of a roll neck sweater or hand embroidered flowers tracing the neck of a cardigan that sit alongside a demure cropped jacket in a textured knit complete with corsage flower. After all, a woman’s wardrobe should reflect all aspects of her personality...
